Today is the start of week 2 of the wind project. For today we, myself and my partner, are to be reviewing a presentation on Wind Loads by the ASCE code, that should be presented by the TA Istiaque Hassan.

What is Wind?

In todays lecture it was discussed that wind is the difference in air pressure that causes atmospheric gases to flow from the region of high pressure to that of lower pressure.

It was also discussed that if an individual is developind a building plan, the building or the designing of a structure in the environment and the wind patterns should always be taken into consideration.

We also discussed the factures one should take into concideration in the environment before building a structure.

The factors of the environment that should be considered are:

• Structure roughness- how close it is to another building

• Structure height

• Exposure- is the building in an urban or suburban area

-A high rise building posts a greater risk from wind resistance while, low rise buildings resist less wind.

-Overall, wind patterns are almost impossible to predict. But given the right tools and the input of past wind

data, one can get as close to accurate as possible if not 100%.

-Therefore, structures are to be built according to a regions American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)

code.

Ethics- Applied Practice and Research 6/19/12

What is Ethics?

Where is it used?

Why is it important?

Can it be used by just anyone?

These are all good questions when approaching a complex question. Ethics could be view as a kind of principle of how one morally conducts one's self in a particular situation. The usage of ethics is important in that it can protect the well-being of humans and animals. Ethical thinking is especially important to research. One will gain positive values such as:

• Knowledge

• Truthfulness (most of the time)

• To avoid error

Morality is ones view on what is right or what is wrong. One could believe that a particular action is acceptable but looking back, it turned out that it was a bad decision. Therefore, if one would look at the path towards ethics one would be able to protect ones valuable assets. If one should have an ethical mindset, one would be able to promote the research aims of ethics. That individual would have the knowledge about information and the truth to that information while trying to avoid vital ethical errors.

The accepted eleven applicants for the University of Texas in Arlington REU summer program were given a

welcome speech by Dr. Nur Yazdani of Civil Engineering, and the other heads participating in the programs.

The eleven applicants were of five categories offered by the university. Project A, showed basically how

earthquakes and soil movements affects daily life and is over seen by Dr. Anand Puppa of Civil engineering.

Then there was Project B, which is being overseen by Dr. Melanie Sattler and Dr. Yvette Weatherton of Civil

Engineering. This project is about the possible planning for airborne terrorism (bombs) that could target

populated areas. Project C is the Extreme wind loads on structures or how sustainable man-made structures

can stand against natural and manmade disasters, directed by Dr. Nur Yazdani. Project D was how one

could improve the evaluation of detecting hackers or how to detect hackers, overseen by Dr. Matt Wright.

final project is the Power grid failure, directed by Dr. Wei-Jen Lee.

The REU Program entails:

• Project trips

• Campus interactions in events

• Research training

• Overall assessments
